Episode Summary

Tom “TK” Kuegler, Chief Investment Officer at AVG, is back on Founders and Funders to explains how AVG became one of the most active VC firms in the world, in just a few short years. He also gives a brief introduction to venture capital, given that many accredited (and soon-to-be accredited) investors joining the AVG network are new to this asset class.

In this episode, TK answers a few frequently asked questions, including:

  • Why is it essential to be an accredited investor to access venture capital?
  • Why does adding venture capital to an investment portfolio makes sense?
  • What should investors expect after writing that first check?

TK says that AVG investors own (or will own) a portfolio of 20-30 investments across stage, geography, and industry, regardless which of the firm’s 25 funds they’ve invested in. That includes AVG’s core alumni funds; focused funds like the First Check Fund, Blockchain Fund, and Women’s Fund; and “index-like” funds such as Select and Total Access Fund. Putting together all that activity, AVG has invested in roughly 200 portfolio companies, with many more deals in the works. This investing pace ensures the firm will to continue to be comfortably listed among the world’s most active venture firms.

Listen to this episode for a better understanding of what venture investing can do for your portfolio, or to learn more about the opportunity created by AVG. And if you want to hear more “TK-isms,” listen to his earlier episode on why sales is an essential business skill for every entrepreneur.
